TRAIN TIME: K-Line #K-1715B Hershey's Holiday Express Set (1997 ) - Pt 1 Set Box, Contents, Paper

Welll, the Hershey's package I was waiting for, and which was supposed to be delivered over a week ago, has finally arrived. It got hung up in Missouri for days before finally being sent EASTWARD to the Chicago Regional Distribution Center, then being sent on its way SOUTHWESTWARD to Arizona, before finally trundling its way NORTHWARD to Vegas. GOOD F*N GRIEF!

Anywho, it's here now and I'm pleased as punch. For years I thought this set was one which was cataloged but never produced. But then a couple of years ago I came across the 'AB" set of diesels, which only came in this set. They were loose - no box - but I bought them and they looked and worked great. The Heavy Hauler that came with this set was a departure from the norm in that it was a container truck, not the standard trailer. It too was something that I thought I'd never find - until a couple of months ago until one landed in my lap so to speak. I already had the separate sale containers to go with the truck. The bottom line is, for the past several years I've been gathering all the bits and pieces to the set, one piece at a time because the complete set, with box, was nowhere to be had...

...until a few weeks ago! This is the very first boxed set I've seen even after years of searching! There couldn't have been many produced and boy did I scarf it up quick!! So now, I basically have a complete boxed set as well as nearly all the items in the set which I had bought piece-by-piece over the years.

The set first appeared in the 1997 K-Line First Edition catalog as kind of an afterthought, sharing space on the page with Coca-Cola, NABISCO, and Heinz.

1997 catalog extract

It appeared again in the 1998 First Edition catalog...

...and lastly in the 1999 First Edition catalog

All things considered, K-Line's Hershey's products had a darn good run, having been cataloged from 1991 to 1999 (with the exception of 1996 for which I could find no reference - yet). This was, IMO, a Super Set. It had brand new engines, a couple of new cars, new Heavy Hauler tractor-trailer, new containers (for use with the Heavy Hauler), billboards, railroad station, Hershey's store, track and transformer. K-Line certainly let Hershey's go out with a bang on this one. Be Blessed and Relish Life! Ed

My set was sold through JC Penney's department store for $199.99 back in 19999.

Empire Plastics - 40mm Robot (Archer copy) - Green SP

Here's an interesting little robot that I've had in the collection for a while now. After sitting in The Cave for so long, it was time to take photos and try to identify it. I posted it to a couple of Meta groups and they identified it as one of Empire Plastic's small space pieces. Empire had spaceships, space cars, aliens, you name it. It was a wonderful line of toys packaged nicely on rocket ship-shaped backing cards. The robot itself is a fairly crude rendering of Archer's much larger 4" hard plastic robot. I have a few more pieces in the collection from this small series and I'll post when the photos are done. Be Blessed and Relish Life! Ed

M. S. Oliver Forbidden Planet 54mm Figures - Pt 5 (Final) Robby The Robot

Forbidden Planet, now starring Robby the Robot as Himself! You can't have a set of figures for this movie without Robby, he is the star of the film (who needs humans after all?) LOL

This is a superbly done, multi-part casting which even includes a separate (and quite small) ray gun. The multi-part casting allows for his torso, head, and arms to rotate or move independently of each other. I don't consider myself a 'robot collector' other than acquiring robots that are part of a broader series of spacemen, but I have been tempted to buy a larger tin or plastic version of this just because it's such a cool, iconic figure.
